What is a "Psychiatric Diagnosis"?

A psychiatric diagnosis is a tool to help categorize symptoms that are commonly seen together.  Often it is the case that once a diagnosis is made, the next step- a treatment plan- is much clearer.

A psychiatric diagnosis should never be used as a way to label, judge or dismiss someone.  Also, if someone meets criteria for a psychiatric diagnosis, although this knowledge can help us to understand their situation, it by no means is it an excuse for that person not to make effort to improve/ help themselves.

One need not meet criteria for a specific diagnosis to have impairment and obtain help.

Following are some commonly seen diagnoses:

ADHD and the Disruptive Behavior Disorders
  • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
  • ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder)
  • Conduct Disorder
